SCUBA diving is not the cheapest activity you could choose to do at university, but it's a fantastic experience and as part of a club like ours it will be much cheaper than many other paths through diver training.
The costs you will encounter as a member with us include:
- Club Membership
Membership for the year is currently £52. This pays for maintaining and renewing the kit that the club has for members to use, including air tanks, BCDs, regulators, weights, spare suits, dive computers, emergency equipment, our boats and their engines, and the air compressor.
When you also take into account that all the training your recieve is from other members at no additional charge, you get a lot for your money. - AU and SportRec Membership
These are needed for participation in any sports activity at the university, so you may already have them through another club or if you use the Jubilee Sports Centre.
The AU membership includes insurance in case anything goes wrong, and is just £5. It will usually be paid at the same time as your club membership fee.
SportRec gives you access to the university sports facilities including the sports centre (with the pool, gym, etc) and the Boathard (where our kit is held), and varies in price - see http://sportrecsotonacuk.pre-dns-change.com/content/view/70/63/ - BSAC Membership
Since we are a BSAC branch and offer BSAC training you must be a BSAC member. For the year this is currently £19 for students. Check out their website - www.bsac.com - for more details. - Trip costs
When we go diving there is often a small charge to the operators of the facilities at the location such as access to the boat launch. On weekend trips this is usually £10 or less. We may also ask for contributions towards fuel or the hire of minibuses, for example. - Buying your own kit
We provide quite a lot of the kit, but you will need your own mask (and snorkel), fins, weights and dry/semi-dry suit. These come in many shapes and sizes and it depends on how much you are willing to spend, but all this will typically cost you between £250-£400. This may seem expensive but is a one-off purchase that will hopefully give you many years of service. If in doubt, come and ask us for advice.
